Swiss Family Robinson

Swiss Family Robinson
by Johann David Wyss
By: Alan
3 out of 5 stars

My thoughts: I was sort of disappointed in the book because in the movie they have a pirate attack and in the book there are no pirate’s but, there was a giant boa attack. The donkey was accidentally let go and was killed by the boa and then they shot it while it’s eating the donkey. This book made me feel like if I was ship wrecked I could save me and my family by what I have read. This sort of compares to another book where 6 kids are ship wrecked and survives on an island.

A family of 6 is shipwreck on an island and is left to their own devices. Father, Mother, Fritz, Ernest, Jack and little Francis build an aerial tree house, a house in a rock, along with many other things. They use what is on is on the island and left on the ship to survive ten years. They have sugar, a large farm, lots of common animals and exotic birds and animals. They tame a buffalo, an ostrich, an elephant, a hawk; some parrots a jackal, a monkey and some bees.

By Hyrum

Summary: The Black Cauldron is about Taran and his companions (Who are the kings of the other lands, Doli and Fflewddur) set of to destroy the black cauldron of Anouvin. Everyone had a different task. When the people who went to get the cauldron got there they found out that the cauldron has already been taken! Princess Eilonwy and faith full gurgi snuck away to join the companions. Then the7 of them went out to find the cauldron.

Why I liked the book: I liked it but not that much. It has like 5 really good parts and 10 so so. It made me feel like I should not say rude things to people how like Taran did to Eilonwy. I really liked Doli because he can turn invisible. I hope you liked the book. Bye.

His companions names are Elionwy a princess and Fflewddur flam a bard. They also run into two other companions named Gurgi a animal who is trying to be a human and Doli a dwarf.

How I liked the book: I kind of liked the book though it wasn`t too good. It had a few good parts but not whole lot. It made me feel like I was Eilonwy. I like being at least one of the main charters and she can do magic. Even though she can do magic and I can`t I still like her.

The Red Pyramid

The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan
Review by Alan
Stars: 4
Summary:Carter and Sadie Kane have been separated since their mom died. One night their dad takes them to a museum and promises to make everything right. Then everything goes wrong. Their father summons a god named Set and then he blows up the museum and there father is entombed in a coffin and sent through the floor.
They then are told by their long lost uncle that magic is real and Egyptian gods are real too. They then spend the next week tracking down the god that captured their father to set their father free. They then realize that they have to stop Set from destroying the North American continent.
My Thoughts:This is an exciting book. It is like the Percy Jackson Series that my brother is reviewing and it is also by the same author. I liked this book and I have read all of his books for kids. This book made me feel nervous at some points because I was thinking  “Are they going to die?” or “What is going to go wrong again?” It made me laugh and my family would be asking “What’s so funny?”
I can sort of relate to the characters like I am away from by brother for a week and when I get back he is changed just like Carter and Sadie have been away from each other for 6 years and they have changed a lot. This is similar to the Percy Jackson books by having gods and magic. It is also like the Mahican another book I hope to review.

Holes Author: Louis Sachar

   By: Hyrum
Awards: Newbery winner

Summary: Holes is about a kid named Stanley Yelnats who was arrested because he stole some shoes (well they think). At court Stanley is given a choice to go to Camp Green Lake or go to jail. Stanley chooses to go to Camp Green Lake. At Camp Green Lake you dig holes to build character. Someone named Zero ran away and Stanley went to go look for him. They would have died if they wouldn`t have found refuge on (What it’s called) God’s thumb.
What I Thought About The Book: I really liked Holes because it is a book of friendship and kindness. It made me feel sad for Zero because he lost his family. I liked Zero because he was kind and a friend.
A good quote is When Mr. Sir says “It aint girl scouts.”

Mrs. Frisbee and the Rats of NHIM

Mrs. Frisbee and the Rats of NHIM

Mrs. Frisby is a mouse widow and has 4 kids. One day her youngest son falls ill and she goes to see the mouse healer. He gives her some medicine for her son. On the way home she met a crow that was trapped in some wire. She freed him and they became friends.
There is this day called moving day and on that day the mice in the garden have to move to somewhere else because, the farmer goes through the garden and crunches everything up with the tractor. Mrs. Frisby’s son that got sick is not allowed to move out of the house or else he will get sick again. So Mrs. Frisby asks the crow for advice and he says to go to the owl. The owl tells her to go to the rats who are very peculiar creatures. She then finds why the rats are peculiar.
My thoughts: I really like this book because it has a lot twists. Like at about half way through the book they introduced the rats. There are also a lot of different problems. Where one mouse gets sick and then there’s moving day. It made me feel like there were civilizations that are as advanced as us out there.
I can relate to Mrs. Frisby not that I have the same problems but, I have had something I have wanted to do and then I have to do something else and then something else. So I never get to do what I wanted to. This compares to other books like in Eragon there was the problem of whose side am I on. And half way through they introduce that real problem.

A Year down Yonder Author: Richard Peck

Awards: Newberry Winner
Rating: 5 – 5 stars
Recommendation: 8+

Summary: Mary Alice went to her Grandmas place (For some unknown reason). She has a hard time making friends. She has new experiences like living with grandma and doing the things Grandma normally does without company. She has a good time at grandmas and will always have a good time at Grandmas.
How I liked the book. I really liked it because it was a book with funny parts and (I bet) everything you would like.  It made me feel sad at some points because Mary Alice had to go away from her family. It was hilarious like When Grandma says funny stuff. My favorite charter was Grandma. She was big ridiculous and everything you need.
A funny quote from the story is “I Just don`t want you to scare him off. ‘Who me’? Said Grandma"

Eargon

Eragon by Christopher Paolini
By Alan
Awards: none
Summary: Eragon a 15 year old boy is hunting in the woods near his farm when suddenly something shoots from the sky. He picks up what fell from the sky and finds out it’s a light blue seamless stone. He returns to his village and tries to sell it to the butcher but he refused to take it because he thinks it’s cursed.
Eragon later finds out that the stone is really an egg and not just any egg a dragon egg! He soon finds out that his uncle will die because of some creatures that are looking for the egg. He then finds himself on this quest to avenge his uncle and to save the land from an evil tyrant.

My thoughts: I really liked this book. I had read it a bit and disliked it but a friend said keep reading so I did. The consequence of that was I stayed up late at night to read the book. It made me feel like I was in the world of Eragon. At some parts it made me feel sad and I just had to put down the book and walk away.
I cannot relate to the character because I have never experienced what he has so I have no way of relating to Eragon. This book can compare to others by having more emotion than others. The writer describe how he felt at certain times in great detail.

A Wrinkle in Time

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
By Alan
Newbery medal winner

Summary: Meg Murry, Charles Wallace Murry, and Calvin O’Keefe meet in the woods near a haunted house and become friends. Calvin is a sports player and is not cared about by his family. Meg has the most challenging part in the book, nobody likes her at school. She has a lot of faults like being stubborn and impatient. Charles can tell what you are thinking without you even saying anything. He is also really smart and knows a lot of definitions of words.
Then in the haunted house they meet Mrs. Who, Mrs. Witch and Mrs. Whatsit who whisked them away on a dangerous mission to find Meg’s father and stop an evil force that is trying to take over a planet.
My thoughts: I really like the book. I think that this is an exciting book where there are different creatures. They have this thing called tesseract where you can move through dimensions and places. It is a book I would recommend for kids 9+ because it can be sort of confusing and it made me feel edgy. It also has some scary parts (though no one dies).
I can relate to Meg, she feels like no one understands her and I feel the same way about myself. I really like that the book has weird and unusual things that do not happen in the real world. It was unusual when Mrs. Whatsit turns into a flying centaur. This book has a lot of talking but not much action unlike The Ranger’s Apprentice.

A good Quote is “There is such thing a tesseract my pet."

Percy Jackson # 2 “The Sea of Monsters” Author: Rick Riordan

By : Hyrum
1 – 5 stars 4stars

Summary: Percy Jackson has just found out he has a brother, a Cyclopes! His name is Tyson and he is very strong. He is a very good metal worker. He also loves Percy. Well camp Half – Blood is under attack! The borders are failing. They are failing because someone poisoned Talia's tree. Talia's tree helps protect the borders of camp Half – Blood witch keep monsters out. Well from the first book (if you read it) you know Clarisse. She got a mission to the Sea of Monsters and Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson snuck out of camp and joined Clarisse on her mission.

What I thought About the Book: I liked it because it had parts where they got lost and then they work their way back together. There was parts of scariness and funny. My favorite charter was Tyson. He was strong and a good metal worker. We both like to help others. It made me feel like frustrated because at some parts of the book like at the end the characters were frustrated, (I like to feel like the characters). It was a very cool book though it wasn't my favorite. Hoped you liked my summary, bye!

Percy Jackson # 1 Author: Rick Riordan

5 stars

By: Hyrum

Percy Jackson is a powerful half – blood that gets a quest to the underworld to get the lightning bolt and to save his mother. His friends Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood accompany Percy on his quest.  Since Percy is a half – blood he is half human half god. His dad (which is a god) Poseidon is the ruler of the water. So naturally Percy is the son of the sea god. Annabeth is a daughter of Athena goddess of wisdom and battle is a good fighter so you might want to watch your back! Then there is Grover the satyr is a good friend.

I liked it because it has lots of action and fighting, magic and all of that other stuff. It was kind of funny and scary because it has a lot of funny jokes and a lot of violence.  At a lot of points at the book it made me think, “I wonder what’s going on next”, or something like that. My favorite character is Annabeth because she can fight well and she is smart like me.

A pretty funny quote is “I realized I hadn’t eaten anything unhealthy since I arrived at half – blood hill, where we lived on grapes, bread, cheese and extra- lean- cut nymph prepared barbecue. What this boy needed was a double cheese burger."   Another one is “What type of camp has an armory?”
